Abstract: The Charbonneau group uses theory and simulations to uncover the complex assembly behavior of soft matter and biological systems. This talk will survey our work with a focus on frustrated models, which support a rich variety of ordered and disordered microphases yet remain challenging to sample because frustration generates extensive metastability and suppresses efficient critical sampling. To address these difficulties, we developed simulation methodologies capable of capturing superlattices with fluctuating site occupancy, allowing us to map the equilibrium phase behavior of arbitrary microphase formers. Building on mean-field insights, we have recently clarified why conventional cluster-based approaches fail to overcome critical slowing down in these systems. We are now extending our strategies to the disordered-microphase regime by integrating advanced biasing techniques with machine-learning–assisted sampling. This framework also informs our investigations of biologically relevant systems, where similar frustrations and mesoscale assemblies arise.
