Applications of Nuclear Physics to Medicine
Nuclear Physics and the methods developed in Nuclear and Particle Physics—such as advanced data analysis and Monte Carlo simulations—have found increasing applications in the field of Medicine. In this seminar, I will present an overview of my research, which focuses on these interdisciplinary applications. In particular, I will introduce WIDMApp, a research project aimed at revolutionizing molecular radiotherapy monitoring through innovative simulation and modeling techniques. I will also discuss recent developments in the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit to enhance the simulation of low-energy nuclear reactions, which are of particular relevance for ion therapy.
Furthermore, I will explore the use of generative Deep Learning to emulate specific components of nuclear reaction models, leading to hybrid approaches that combine physical accuracy and computational efficiency. Finally, I will present our work on Deep Learning emulators of full Monte Carlo simulations for external beam treatment plans, and how the differentiable nature of such models enables direct optimization of treatment parameters.
