Titolo: An adventure in qubitland

Abstract: In my field of research we are constantly trying to design better solid-state qubits. This means inventing a condensed matter device where a two-level quantum system can be decoupled from its environment but also measured and driven with some ease. As an example, I will discuss the case of a spin-1/2 quasiparticle trapped in a Josephson junction. Thanks to spin-orbit coupling, at low temperatures the spin of the quasiparticle is protected from relaxation by a mechanism based on the Franck-Condon principle. The example illustrates the general ideas currently used in this field of research, and at the same time represents a realistic proposal towards scalable spin-based devices for quantum error correction.
