Thesis abroad & Free movers

Thesis Abroad allows you to carry out part of your thesis work (research, lab activities, data collection or writing) at an international host university or institution, subject to approval by your supervisor and Faculty procedures. Participation is governed by a dedicated call for applications, which sets eligibility criteria, eligible destinations, duration, possible funding, required documents and deadlines. Before applying, confirm the feasibility of your thesis project with the host institution and check Calls & Deadlines for the current call and instructions.

Free Mover mobility allows you to study abroad outside institutional programmes (e.g., Erasmus+) by independently arranging enrolment at the host university. In some cases, you may apply for a scholarship or fee waiver offered directly by the host institution, subject to its own rules and deadlines.

Free Movers - or "visiting students" - are students who are neither enrolled in a degree programme nor participating in an exchange programme organised by the university (such as Erasmus) but choose to manage their study abroad.

To attend courses at another university and have credits officially recognised as part of your university transcript, you must obtain authorisation from the faculty at your home university and admission from the host university.

If you plan to take exams and obtain ECTS credits to be recognised in your degree programme, you must obtain prior authorisation from the Head/Chair of your Degree Programme, approving your study plan/activities (via a Learning Agreement or an equivalent document). Only pre-approved activities supported by official documentation (e.g., a Transcript of Records) can be considered for credit recognition upon return. We recommend contacting your degree programme and the Mobility Desk well in advance to confirm timelines and required documents.
